The U.S. Forest Service - current owner of this land - is in the process of demolishing these buildings using ,000,000 in federal stimulus funds. Demolishing the radar towers, cooling plant, power generation plant, and other structures at the upper base will require an additional ,000,000 - which the USFS doesn’t have - so a big chain link fence has been built around the upper base - including the upper scenic overlook where one can see the Anza-Borrego Desert. The lower overlook isn’t fenced, however, this area is now frequently patrolled.
Mount Laguna Air Force Station is located atop Mount Laguna, with a steep drop into the Anza Borrego desert. It was a DEW (Distant Early Warning) site, watching for incoming missiles, and housed about 170 people until it was downsized in 1981. Now it is a multi-use satellite and radar communications site, operated primarily by the FAA, out of Los Angeles Center.
Beginning in 1952, the Mt. Laguna Air Force Station was home to the 751st Aircraft Control and Warning (AC&W) Squadron, later the 751st Radar Squadron, part of the Air Defense Command.
